Humming Birds at Feeding Time

The first thing I’d like to say is that I’m sorry for the long pause between posts. I have been working both jobs and not had much time for blogging. 😦 I will do better I promise.

Today I want to talk about a small but very energetic bird. The other day as I was outside with the puppies, the humming birds were at the feeders. They are so much fun to watch. If they were in kindergarten the teacher would write on their report card that they do not play well with others and that they need to learn to share. These tiny little birds will not let the other humming birds near the feeder that they decide is theirs. I saw one bird fight off several others from not just one feeder but two feeders that were side by side. He was so funny because he couldn’t make up his mind which feeder was his and wouldn’t let any other birds near them. They will also attack other animals that they see as a threat to the food supply such as dogs and even people. But you do have a warning when they attack. They can’t help but warn you because they make a humming sound as they fly. So you can duck out of the way when you hear it.

We had at least a dozen birds flying around and landing in the trees around the feeders. In addition to the humming sound made by their wings they also make a twittering sound. The air was filled with both sounds as they voiced how they felt about the battle for the feeders. The thing is that there are four feeders and plenty for all to share. But Humming Birds haven’t learned to share and most likely never will.

I did manage to get a few pictures of them. . Two at one of the feeders and one in a tree. I hope you enjoy them.

Owls and July Lady

I love living in the country! I was walking home from my parents with my son, Ryan, when a huge owl swooped past us across the yard. Ryan was so excited because he had heard my husband and me talking about the owl and hadn’t seen it. Now he can say he has seen the owl. Barny, as we have started calling him, likes to sit on the top of the yard light pole so he can see the critters that come into the yard and then swoop down and catch them.

I also wanted to post my latest artwork. I am currently working on a series of ladies for each month using birthstones and flowers. I have completed through July and wanted to share her with you. You can see all of my art in my gallery here. Each piece includes the birthstone and flower for each month along with the meanings for each. I hope everyone enjoys them as much as I have enjoyed making them.
